Welcome!

Dear Fourth Grader and Family,

My name is John Bauer and I will be your fourth grade teacher for the 2017-18 school year at Meridian Elementary. I am very excited to work with you and learn more about you!

Fourth grade is an exciting year in learning. I will make the transition of teachers as smooth as possible.

I would like to share a little about myself. I am married and have two rescue dogs named Brewster and Cinna, which keep me very busy and often are the main characters in my stories. You will get to hear many of these stories about Brewster and Cinna this year!

I grew up on a farm in central South Dakota and went to school in a small town of about 500 people. I graduated with a Bachelor’s of Science degree from Northern State University in Aberdeen, SD with a double major in elementary and special education. I taught special education in South Dakota for three years before moving to Bloomington, MN. I have taught grades 2, 3, 4, and 5, but fourth grade is secretly my favorite! I moved to Arizona several weeks ago when my spouse’s job was relocated to Arizona.

We are excited to begin this new chapter of our lives in Arizona and look forward to warm sunny days. We will not miss cold winters in Minnesota! In my free time, I love to read, go on runs (I am training for a Disney half marathon), watch movies, and try new restaurants. We love the variety of eating places available in AZ!

When I look back at my teachers and how they influenced me, I remember connections I made with them and lessons that were engaging and fun! I do the same for my students by making life long connections to me, to one another, and to learn about themselves and how growth mindset changes how we learn. My students become problem solvers and critical thinkers. My students know I was part of them feeling safe, connected and to remember I cheered them on when they demonstrated character or were successful academically, socially or emotionally.

My classroom management style is focusing on engaging academics, building positive community, and developing relationships. I emphasize high standards in my room for all learners. Students should expect high standards from themselves, from me and from one another. Every student can learn and I differentiate lessons so every student is successful.
